Former UH TE Don Johnson mentioned here. I think he's a professor now.
At a North American Society of Sport History meeting, Olsen discovered many professors who were presenting sports literature papers and decided to found the Sport Literature Association by publishing an issue of Arete: The Journal of Sport Literature in 1983.
Also, Don Johnson was a tight end for Hawaii when they played Humboldt State in a 1968 football game before joining the SLA later.
Stull said former athletes like Oriad and Johnson are just a small sample of an eclectic group that has maintained their love of sports despite career changes.
“Many of them are former athletes, but the majority of them now are English professors or intellectuals who try to incorporate sporting themes into their work,” Stull said.

Graham Harrell's statistics are mind boggling: 72 percent completion rate, 5,705 yards, 48 touchdowns. Harrell is a true Heisman candidate in the same way Hawaii's Colt Brennan became the man last year

Good Morning
Everywhere you look there's adversity and I pray that all are coping. And I hope for blue, or even bluer skies for all in the future. Cherish you're lives,love ones and jobs. And where you read so often about others losing love ones or their jobs you'll never know exactly what they're are going through unless you experience a loss yourselves. And I have. And it hurts. And I can relate the grief others have at one time felt. With, now myself, a heavy heart doesn't begin to describe how one feels or how I feel. My beloved wife passed on yesterday morning in her sleep...and reminiscing...it always brought her such a smile and happiness of the times I told her about ST blog and my contributions or posts, some of which I would read to her. With a tearful departure I look back into her eyes and I cried, and cried and wished I had celebrated or cherish her life more. And maybe even paying more attention to her. In last few months(maybe even a year ago) I agreed with her that maybe we should turn off the internet( I wished I had.) Even spending three or four a night on the internet was taking time away from her and taking it's toll and we fought about this..and now looking back regretfully I wish I had cherished her and not what brought me happiness like spending too much away time from her on the internet. And my message to the readers..please look with open eyes at your love ones...and sometimes put them in your shoes and maybe see if there's a huge void in your spouses life that you maybe be your contributing to. And there are things that are missing that doesn't promote a healthy relationship, well being or good health to your spouse. And cryfully for myself, one doesn't realize unless it's too late. So this is my message to the readers. Everyone take the best of care to yourselves and especially to your love ones.
Off to Legoland...it should be fun to see Pauoa Boy's family there!

I hope you cherish the memory of her laughing when you laughed, either with others or at yourself. I am sure she cherished the moments she saw you with a smile on your face. God knows the family of Warrior Tsaikos here make each other laugh. And in case she didn't tell you often enough how smart you were, which I'm sure she did, let me remind you about how smart you are and how much you've contributed to a number of peoples lives, including yours truly.

Which reminds me of the Bronstrom family. No matter how much I scream "41 to go will," my rootin for the Warriors will not make my saddened heart feel any better about the terrible times and losses that befallen our own.
Bereavement is appropriate and necessary for the survivors, and acknowledgment and support by friends is soothing for the friends.
So Marlis, again, my sincere condolences. I am sure your wife took great pride in knowing she was helping you feel good about what you were doing in your life, and felt she was helping and supporting you too. Don't begrudge her for doing what she felt was important in her life. Remember that the greatest woman in your life loved you until her last breath. Peace.

1. ST is the heart and soul of our unity. Not that he is a better person than anyone else, but because his spirit is so open to all who would be attracted- like a magnet to iron filings, who in turn, become magnetized by close association.
2. ST will know that where he leads, people will follow. The times have changed and people want truth as well as news they can feel happy about.

College Football, Florida Gators Football, Preview/Prediction
I'll be breaking down each of the 2008 Florida Gators' opponents and making predictions game by game. Please feel free to give your input and make your opinions known throughout the series. I am happy to discuss the games.
Game One vs. Hawaii, Aug. 30
Info: The University of Hawaii is coming off a tremendous football season in 2007. The Warriors, led by Coach June Jones, won the WAC Conference with an 8-0 record in conference play, and earned a 12-0 record overall, good enough to earn the Warriors a trip to the Sugar Bowl.
Although Hawaii’s undefeated season ended with a 41-10 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, the Warriors had a year to be proud of.
Offseason: The Warriors' offseason didn't start off too well. First off, Hawaii lost Heisman Trophy finalist and starting quarterback Colt Brennan, as well as wide receivers Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullen. Bess and Grice-Mullen combined for 2,638 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns.
In addition, head coach June Jones, who had a career record of 76-41 at Hawaii, left the Warriors to take the head-coaching job at Southern Methodist University. June Jones won two WAC Championships and became the winningest coach in school history during his tenure at Hawaii.
Jones has since been replaced by Greg McMackin, Hawaii’s defensive coordinator. McMackin improved Hawaii’s defense from 93rd in the nation in 2006 to 33rd in the nation last season. Greg McMackin also served as the defensive coordinator for Hawaii in 1999; Hawaii’s only other WAC Championship under June Jones.
2008 Outlook: Hawaii looks to fight Boise State and Fresno State for the WAC Championship, despite the loss of QB Colt Brennan. Greg McMackin’s recruiting class, which included defensive back Steven Christian, was good enough to rank as the best non-BCS class of 2008, according to ESPN.com analyst Billy Tucker.
Game Prediction: Florida 45 - Hawaii 17 Greg McMackin’s debut as a head coach is, unfortunately for him, in Gainesville, at “The Swamp.” The Gators’ offense is too good and the Gators have too many playmakers for Hawaii to stop. This game should be close in the first quarter, but Florida will pull away easily soon after. The Gators, led by QB Tim Tebow, will win comfortably at home and carry a 1-0 record into next week’s matchup with the Miami Hurricanes.

Those who question what CB coulda done against better competition never seem to point out that he opened the prior season with 350 yds at Bryant-Denny; threw for 388 and 5 TD's at BCS-bound Boise; ended the year with 3 games against a Big 10 and two Pac-10 opponents by going 103 of 140 for 1394 yds with 10 TD's; and ended the season with an NCAA-best 185.96 rating.

Liz, when I bought my solar water heater back in the early 1990s, all I got back was a tax deduction.
Nowadays, its much cheaper cause you can get a rebate from HECO, too.
If you haven't already, look into any other deductions out there.
gigi- HECO is on Oahu. We have KIUC. They give a rebate only if you are converting from an electric heater.
I have gas.
Liz, when it's cloudy and the water doesn't get hot enough, we use electricity to automatically heat the water in the tank. Is that what you're gonna do?

I still have my gas Bosch on-demand heater.

Actually he is the #2 man ovah deah and went to UH with ST. His wife is my cousin Bridgette, she's a Pediatrician at Pali Momi Hopital.

You can consider the weekend shutdown as ST's very personal way of showing support for our 54 fired colleagues as well as our entire Tiser family, regardless of the lack of respect he's been subjected to by specific people on both sides.

Great Hilo Party tonight for two grandkids. 1 going UHM, the other NAU. plenty food. kalua pig, lomi salmon, poi, poke, sashimi, rice, chicken luau, squid luau, potato salad, juice, soda, water, an 5 groups including John Cruz, Sudden Rush. too young, don't know all their names. but wuz a good time in Hilo and they still going. wanted to get back to da spot and say hello to my friends.

They're feeling good about UH too. Kalamaku's prediction Long story short, 11-2, splitting Boise/Fresno and Florida OSU games. Less circulation means more cutbacks.
The unions are circulating subscription cancellation cards that the union can use to stop your subscription when and if they make us go out on strike.
If you support ST, start a subscription and contact any one of the unions and sign a cancellation card.
